One Minute Summary of micro-clime.com
micro-clime.com is a planning tool for activities in steep terrain. Currently, the site does one thing: Predict temperatures on rock faces for rock climbing
How to use:
- Look for your area of interest on the map. If it is covered with blue squares, it is ready to use for that area
- Zoom in, and identify the face you are interested in. Faces are represented with colored polygons. The polygon color identifies the aspect of the face, and faces with similar aspects will have similar temperature profiles
- To help identify the face, use the layer selector in the upper right corner to get a satellite image layer
- The markers are cliff locations from mountainproject, and are there for context to help you find the right polygon
- Click on the polygon of interest, then click Details
- The rock temperature prediction is shown as the purple line. It is generally comfortable to climb if it is in the white zone between the red (too hot) and blue (too cold) zones, though this also depends on other factors including wind, humidity, preferences, etc.
Keep in mind:
- Shade from mountains and trees (occlusion) is not yet modeled, so rocks in canyons etc. may be colder than expected
- The rock face identification system is in its infancy, and will be rife with errors. Most big and low angle faces are captured.
- You can use the direct model to get general info about an aspect
